Ian MacGregor started his musical studies as a choral scholar at Magdalen College, Oxford, where he read mathematics.

He is a founding director of Various Entertainments Ltd, which has presented a series of Magic Spectacular productions including Cinemagic and A Fistful Of Broken Wands Bloomsbury Theatre and Millfield Magic Millfield Theatre.

Ian has extensive choral experience, both as a singer with professional choirs including The Purcell Singers and OSJ Voices, and as the conductor of The Highgate Camerata Salisbury, Coventry, Southwark, St. Paul's Cathedrals and the Royal Automobile Club Chamber Choir.

He is the musical director and pianist for a series of cabaret shows at PizzaExpress Live (Holborn, Birmingham, Maidstone and The Pheasantry) with the casts of West End shows including Phantom of the Opera, Wicked and Les Miserables. He is also the musical director for the Sunday Night Singers Landor Theatre, Upstairs at the Gatehouse, Leicester Square Theatre, a company of West End artists who specialise in performing work by new writers. In 2017 he founded The Ella McCready Trio with singer Ella McCready and cellist Ivan McCready.

He is also a freelance piano/keyboard player.  He played for The Drifters and was a regular dep in Wicked Apollo Victoria.  He has played at variety shows at the London Palladium, Theatre Royal Drury Lane, Royal Albert Hall, Sadlers Wells and The O2 Arena.  Previous musical theatre productions include Anything Goes, Assassins, Barnum, Les Miserables, Me & My Girl, Merrily We Roll Along, Seussical The Musical, The Producers and West Side Story.

Ian was given the Freedom of the City of London in the Worshipful Company of Musicians at a ceremony at the Guildhall in January 2020.
